My Unforgettable Cave Stay at Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in Matera, Italy

Updated: 6 days ago

Melissa’s unforgettable stay at Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in an amazing cave room nestled in Matera’s ancient Sassi Civita district in southern Italy. The footage highlights the unique charm of her restored cave room.

During my journey through southern Italy, I explored incredible destinations like Rome, Naples, and the stunning Amalfi Coast. I indulged in unforgettable experiences—from cruising through Rome in a vintage car to mastering pizza making with a renowned Italian chef, and even mingling in glamorous spots along the Adriatic coast.

However, one experience that truly stole my heart was my visit to Matera crowned by an overnight stay in a cave at the incredible Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita. To spend a night in a place so deeply rooted in history felt like stepping into a living time capsule. Matera, Italy is widely considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe, with evidence of human presence dating back thousands of years.

Discovering Matera: A UNESCO World Heritage Gem

Matera's Sassi district is one of the most impressive places I've ever set foot. With its ancient cave dwellings dating back to the Stone and Bronze Ages, Matera offers a unique glimpse into human history that few places can match. The Sassi evolved from humble homes and churches carved into rock to a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site which was awarded in 1993.

What Makes Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita Unique?

Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is nestled in the Civita area, the heart of the Sassi quarters. The hotel features 18 meticulously restored cave rooms and an ancient church known as the "Cripta della Civita." Every room preserves the original stone structure, creating an authentic experience that transports guests to a bygone era.

My Authentic Cave Room Experience at Sexantio Le Grotte della Civita

Opening the door to my room (Superior room #12) felt like entering a different world. Each cave room is restored to showcase its original shape and materials. The interior design is simple and reflective of the traditional architecture. One essential item to note, should you choose to stay: There is a limited number of electrical outlets in each dwelling, so if you need to recharge several gadgets, be sure to bring an adapter or converter.

To add to the evening ambiance, your charming room will be lit up with candles and also include a small bedside lamp. I did desire a little more light and took a short walk over to the concierge where I requested more candles. Once the candles were lit, my room felt cozy and I was content. I found the bed was extremely comfortable and there was no noise at all.

Savoring Local Flavors: Dining at Sextantio

The hotel's onsite restaurant serves a delicious menu focused on traditional Southern Italian cuisine. I enjoyed a delightful soup paired with a selection of local meats and cheeses. A surprise moment came when the cook shared her family's personal connection to the Sassi, enriching my dining experience with heartfelt history.

Exploring Matera: A Guided Tour, Rock-Hewn Churches, and Magical Evenings

During my stay, I explored Matera's cobblestone streets with a knowledgeable guide, visiting the fascinating rock-hewn churches scattered throughout the Sassi. As dusk fell, I took a ride on an Ape Calessino (tuk-tuk), a very popular (and comfortable, I might add) way to explore the ancient city. My driver was informative, humorous, and zipped around the streets with ease. For those who prefer not to walk up steep hills, this is a fabulous way to tour Matera. The motorized three-wheeled vehicles navigate the steep, narrow streets of this cliffside city. My evening tour of Matera allowed me to admire the glowing lights on the cliffs, accompanied by the soulful music of a live guitarist.
