One of the easiest and fun ways to experience Europe’s Christmas Markets is aboard a holiday river cruise. Imagine gliding along scenic waterways from city to city, waking each day with another charming market on your schedule and feeling like you'll burst with Christmas cheer!

Yes, I sailed on an AmaWaterways Christmas Market river cruise and had the opportunity to stroll through 9 markets. (Prague, Regensburg, Vilshofen, Passau, Vienna, Salzburg, Linz, Bratislava, and Budapest.) Each of them were special in their own way. Without boarding the river cruise, I'm certain I would not have been able to visit as many markets as easily as I did. So, let me share with you some important tidbits I learned.

3 Tips You Should Know to Make the

Most of your Christmas Market River Cruise!

🎁 #1 ~ Christmas Markets come in Different Sizes ~ Some are Big and Some are Small.

Christmas Markets come in all shapes and sizes, each with its own special charm. From the grand, bustling markets of Vienna spreading to the quaint, intimate stalls tucked into the cozy corners of Passau, every market offers a unique experience.

Larger markets often feature a wide variety of vendors and festive entertainment, while smaller ones create a warm, villagelike atmosphere inviting one to mix and mingle with stall operators.

No matter the size, each market is a celebration of local culture and holiday spirit, making every port stop a memorable part of your holiday adventure.

🌟 #2 ~ Christmas Markets Offer Similar Crafts Intermingled with "One of a Kind" Finds: If You Like it, Don't Wait to Purchase.

Each market is a treasure trove where mouthwatering food stalls sit alongside artisan booths brimming with handmade crafts and ornaments. You'll find the familiar glow of twinkling lights, the rich scent of spices in the air, the smell of sizzling sausages, and the cheerful hum of festive chatter enjoying a mug of glühwein.

But here is a word of advice I learned the hard way — handcrafted goods and delicious food differ widely by location. While all markets boast beautiful ornament stalls, unique treasures like finely crafted metalworks in Prague, polished fossils in Salzburg, or herbs and soaps in Passau may be exclusive to those markets. If you spot something special you love, buy it there—there’s no guarantee it will reappear at your next stop!

And let's talk about food - arguably one of the most important "finds" at each market. My advice holds true here too. My husband and I split a sausage in Prague. I loved it and thought to myself, "Next time we grab one, I'm not sharing." Guess what happened? The next market was filled with sizzling grills cooking brats, sausages, etc. but those had different spices in them and the flavor was noticeably different than the ones I sampled in Prague. I learned my lesson too late...

Some tasty treats I loved at one of the Christmas Market stalls!

Each Christmas Market has stalls with yummy pretzels, pastries, hot chocolate, and chimney bread and each region offers its own twist on traditional holiday fare. A sausage in Prague, seasoned with distinct spices, offers a different experience than the ones in Passau or Budapest. You will even notice different buns offered to hold your snack from market to market. The hot chocolate I had in Vienna at the Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market (at the Lindt stall) was the best in my opinion ~ but who doesn't love Lindt chocolate!

If it looks tasty, buy it and try it. If you are worried about eating too much that day, split the treat with a friend - just don't wait until the next market because you may not find the same trinket or treat.

🍷 #3 ~ Christmas Markets are the Social Heart of Season!

Christmas Markets are about more than just shopping—they are lively meeting spots where locals catch up over a warm mug of glühwein and savor regional specialties like smoked salmon or grilled sausages. The inviting atmosphere reconnects friends! For those of us who are visiting the market, expect a crowd of people who are chatting with friends and family. Share a table and wear a smile! This will be a memorable social event to recall in years to come. Check out some of the magical characters below. These folks walked around on stilts and greeted those visiting the market.
